In early spring nests are constructed by the queen and reach the size of a walnut before sterile female workers
take over construction. The queen now focuses on reproduction creating several thousand female workers.
Towards the end of summer male drones fly out of the nest to find female fertile queens which they fertilise, who
in turn, find somewhere to hibernate through the winter, ready to repeat the process in spring.
Wasp nests are dealt with by injecting a powdered poison (Ficam D) directly into it. The nest and it's inhabitants
are usually dead within a couple of hours. The same nest will never be used twice although a return visit to
remove it (including pesticide) is recommended.
Where possible we relocate bumble and honey bees to a local farm which is why we charge slightly more for
bees than wasps. Bees are also dealt with using Ficam D. However, with honey bees there is the possibility that
the honey produced by the original swarm can, at a later date, be taken over by another swarm whose workers
have sniffed out the honey already made and colonised it. It is therefore recommended that, where possible, the
honey is removed, or at least the holes/cracks where the bees were coming and going, are sealed.
